Roads are being the major network across the globe. It has made humans access almost every region but this comes at a very high cost. It severely affects the function of ecosystems and reducing the ability of its natural process. A new study has found that roads shatter Earth’s surface into 600,000 fragments.
The Eberswalde University for Sustainable Development in Germany has done the research by collecting the data of 36 million kilometres of road across the landscapes of the earth. The 600,000 pieces of the earth surface which are affected were not directly affected by roads, it’s the indirect result which resulted in the construction of road globally.
Due to constructions of the road we see problems in animal populations, spread of diseases, increase soil erosion and the contamination of rivers and wetlands. Also by construction roads in remote areas results in an increase of illegal logging, poaching and deforestation.
